Submission Guidelines:
We are now considering unsolicited submissions. We do not have specific
reading periods.. After the current issue goes to print, we consider
submissions for future issues. We will consider any unpublished
original works. We believe that "unpublished" means that you have not
posted it on any publicly accessible websites, and it has not been
printed in any online or print magazines or journals. Simultaneous
and multiple submissions are fine, as long as you notify us immediately
in the case that your work has been accepted elsewhere.
Response Time:
We
will usually respond within one-three months with a rejection letter,
an acceptance letter and publication agreement, or a request for edits
outside the scope of typo corrections or grammar or syntax. Please wait
at least 90 days from date of submission before making additional
inquiries. Additionally, please do not send more than one set of submissions in any six-month period. How to Submit:
Submissions must be typed in a plain 12 point font (or
typewritten traditionally). Short fiction must be double
spaced. Poetry must be single spaced. We will only
read
submissions in Times New Roman, Palatino Linotype, Verdana,
Arial,
Arial Narrow, or other plain (not bold, not underlined)
fonts. Do not submit anything typed
in Comic Sans or Gigi. Do not send artwork to "go along" with
your poetry. We are serious about this.
Include:
-
Cover Letter including name, mailing address, titles of works
submitted, and a brief biographical statement written in third person
point of view (under 200 words).
- The
work.
- If
you are submitting electronically, the cover letter should be in the
body of the email, and the work should be in one single electronic
file, attached, or in the body of the email. Please do not
send 5
poems and a cover letter as six separate files.
- If
you are
submitting by mail, please do not staple pages together.
- SASE
with a #10 envelope if you are submitting by mail. Please do
not send us forms to fill out or postcards to send back. We
recycle all hard-copy submissions, so please do not send large manilla
envelopes for the return of your work.
- We
prefer electronic submissions. Email electronic
submissions to plainspoke@gmail.com . We will accept
.doc, .docx, or .rtf files. Any other file types submitted will not be opened.
Important:
Fiction submissions must use the following
subject line format: - "fiction
submission: Title
of Story"
Poetry submissions must use the following subject line format:
- "poetry submission: # of poems submitted"
All other submissions should follow the following subject line format:
- "type
of submission: author/artist name"
- This
is important because if you do not follow these instructions, your
email will not filter to the appropriate editor, and may not be read.
Don't forget to report your submissions and
update your submission status at Duotrope's
Digest.
